Stop AB 715

AB 715 is a pro-Israel public education censorship bill designed to censor criticism of Israel and education about Palestinian histories, struggles against colonization, and erasure. Despite overwhelming public opposition and a growing consensus that this bill is bad for California students and teachers, and that Israel is in fact committing genocide, the bill passed both the Senate and the Assembly on Friday, September 12, and is now awaiting the Governor's signature. I am writing to urge you to veto AB 715 (Zbur, Addis), a deeply alarming censorship bill that threatens teachers and will stifle education about Palestine in schools.

Despite being opposed by every major statewide education association, including the California Teachers Association, California Federation of Teachers, and the various school administrator associations; by civil rights groups including ACLU California Action; and by a diverse multi-racial and mutli-sector coalition of over 110 organizations, AB 715 was undemocratically rushed through the legislature in the final week of session. The final version of the bill was made public with only three days left in the legislative session, and was fast-tracked through numerous rule and procedural waivers. While AB 715 is a bill regarding education, it is especially alarming that the Assembly Education Committee did not get to vote on this bill – even as the committee’s chair stated his opposition to it.

Both the overwhelming majority of the California electorate and labor is opposed to AB 715. As we have seen Trump weaponize antisemitism at the federal level and attack higher education institutions on this basis, AB 715 does the same by conflating criticism of Israel with antisemitism by tying enforcement to the politicized IHRA definition of antisemitism, inviting and validating politically motivated complaints over actual discrimination.

Additionally, California already prohibits harassment and discrimination in schools—this bill duplicates existing protections while creating vague new standards that will be weaponized to chill instruction and effectively erase Palestinian, Arab, Muslim, and other marginalized voices.

At a time when academic freedom is under attack by Trump across the country, California should not set a precedent for censorship in K-12 education. Please protect our classrooms, teachers, and students across the board and veto AB 715.
